Team Measure Well
Understanding how to foster and measure wellbeing

The Measure Well platform and the Warwick Holistic Health Questionnaire (WHHQ) were developed by professionals working in the wellness sector. Born from a need to quantify and qualify client wellbeing, the processes applied to patient reported outcome measures have proved successful with the NHS and private practices.

Dr Nicola Brough

Dr Nicola Brough has worked in complementary and integrative medicine for over 20 years, she is an experienced craniosacral therapy practitioner and Reiki Master Teacher, clinical supervisor, and group facilitator. Earlier in her career, Nicola worked for a leadership and management company delivering programmes and psychometric testing for training and recruitment purposes. Using tools to measure the ‘inner world’ intrigued Nicola and paved the way to develop the WHHQ as part of her PhD.

For five years, Nicola ran the Torus Wellbeing Clinic supporting the mental and physical health of the community within Staffordshire, United Kingdom.

Nicola has an undergraduate degree in European Business Administration, a Master of Philosophy in Health Sciences and a PhD in Health Sciences from the University of Warwick Medical School, UK. Warwick Holistic Health Questionnaire Development
Patient reported outcome measure research and validation

Gold Standard methodology was used to develop and validate the WHHQ as a patient reported outcome measure (PROM) primarily used for clinical practice. Dr Nicola Brough developed and validated the WHHQ for her PhD with Professor Sarah Stewart-Brown and Dr Helen Parsons of University of Warwick, Warwick Medical School, Health Sciences Division.

Applying qualitative and quantitative approaches to the research provided the opportunity to include genuine experiences from craniosacral therapy (CST) clients and practitioners to ensure face and content validity. A conceptual framework of CST outcomes became the basis from which the Warwick Holistic Health Questionnaire was developed. An introduction to the Conceptual framework can be found here:  Introduction to conceptual framework of CST outcomes and a visual representation can be seen here: Diagram of Conceptual Framework of CST Outcomes.

The WHHQ has been used to evaluate wellness interventions, including craniosacral therapy, Reiki, yoga, meditation, and fitness classes. The scoring system has been applied in UK NHS oncology departments, the voluntary sector and private practices offering wellbeing interventions, mental health support, complementary and alternative medicine, and energy medicine.

Due to its relevance and flexibility, practitioners continually find new areas to use the WHHQ.
